The Poets is a dramatic scenario played out to subtitles collaged from several poems by TS Elliot, which were knitted together to form a new narrative using Elliot’s evocative language. Despite the appearance of the poetry correlating with the physical actions of the two actors, in Mandarin they are announcing their stage directions, and so can be understood without knowledge of their language by making literal readings of their movements. These simple gestures are played off against the apparent depth of the subtitles, and the implied meaning of both the acting and mise-en-scène.
